Jeff Molby Rides Across America for ChemoRiders

Jeff Molby has made a very noble and valiant choice in his life to ride his bike across the U.S. and bring awareness to such a need for people to be able to make their chemo appointments. Chemo Riders is a cause he created to do just that. A fellow Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Caro. Follow his journey https://www.youtube.com/@ChemoRiderhttps://chemoriders.org/Rotary. If you can find it in your heart or your schedule to help get someone to a life saving treatment, or donate to the cause. You could help provide that difference in someone's life who needs it most, and make Jeff's mission one of success.

Christmas Project Shopping

Thanks to Carol Starling for organizing another successful Christmas shopping project!
Last Wednesday, Margo Hahn, Kent Graf, and Jerry and Phoebe Bernhardt along with Mary Bauerschmidt and a dozen Interact members did some serious shopping.  Local families who would otherwise not have much to celebrate will find clothes and toys under the Christmas tree.

We are still seeking donations to do more!  For any Rotarian who would like to contribute, simply drop off a check for $125 at the welcome table and you will be providing a Christmas for another child in Caro.

Emily Speirs, Published Author

Emily Speirs, Cass City freshman and published author, spoke to the Club today about her book, The Aralan Chronicles. This book is suggested for readers age 8-12. Summary: "

Following the death of her mother, Princess Everest's father has barely let her leave the castle, which hasn't been easy. She's even forced to learn from a terrible teacher, Griselda. Everest longs for adventure, but her father is more concerned about her safety.

However, when there's trouble at the castle, everything changes. Now Everest is experiencing what it's like to live outside the castle walls, free from her father's rules and separated from her brother, Soren.

As Everest starts this new life of freedom, adventure awaits. Along the way, she will meet new friends, uncover old mysteries, and learn more about herself in the process. The only question is, Will she ever see her family or the castle again?"

Caro Rotarian Karly Creguer and Cass City Rotarian Val Hartel Mission Trip to Nicaraua

Posted on Feb 22, 2018
story thumbnail
In January 2018 a group of 20 individuals, youth and adults, from St. Christopher Parish in Caro  travelled to Nicaragua to work with Amigos for Christ. This organizations works with rural communities to help them gain access to clean drinking water, modern bathrooms and showers, a stove to reduce smoke inhalation inside homes, and education. During their week-long mission trip, they helped build a school in a community called La Chuscada. Engaging in manual labor, and conversation, alongside local Nicaraguans, the group feels that they gained more from the trip than they gave the community. Caro Rotarian Karly Creguer and Cass City Rotarian Val Hartel were among those in the group.  The Clubs and Club Members of both Cass City Rotary and Caro Rotary supported the mission group with cash donations and items to take for the locals (like the suitcases and children’s books written in Spanish ). They put to work the founding principle of Rotary: Service above Self.

Caro Rotary's visit with District Gov Mike Kelly

story thumbnail
You know a new year is begun when the District Governors begin their visits to set the pace for the new year.  District Governor Mike Kelly's goals for 2015-2016 are:  1.  Support efforts of all clubs in the District  2.  Be the Rotary International Officer in the District  3.  Have fun!! not necessarily in that order.

He spoke of our current Rotary President Ravi Ravindran who is from Sri Lanka.  He is a humble business man whose slogan is “What gets measured, gets done”.  Our club should work toward a Presidential Citation and we should be “A gift to the World”.

Next, Governor Kelly discussed a major piece of Rotary International, the Rotary Foundation.  Last year they gave $47,000,000 in global grants to our clubs as well as $24,000,000 in District Grants.  The membership shared some of our Caro Rotary projects with the Governor.
One major thing that the Rotary Foundation does is Polio Eradication.  There have been only 27 new cases of polio reported this year and those were in Afghanistan and Pakistan.  They are the only two countries left that report having polio.  The Gates Foundation is a matching partner with Rotary Foundation and contributed $70,000,000 in 2014 toward this goal.

He reminded that we should strive to meet President Ravi’s slogan as well as “Service Above Self.”

The District Conference is set for May 20-21st in Alpena.  Mike’s sister is in charge so it will be good!!

Thank you to all members who helped in many ways.

Rotarian of the Year Award:  Carol Starling  is an example of going Above and Beyond the call of being a “Service Above them wherever they needed to go. Especially the District Assembly which was very difficult.  Carol it is appreciated more than you now. It’s kind of like Rotary Attendance X2.  She also has been assisting another club in starting their own Interact Group.   Above all of this, she has put forth huge amounts of effort during the Christmas season when arranging volunteers and shopping for Christmas for youth.  I think I counted at least 6 shopping carts full of items that have to be separated for payment and separately be presented to the families.  All in the name of “ROTARY”.  For this the Award for Rotarian of the Year goes to Carol Starling.   Self “ Rotarian.  She has promoting and encouraging Rotary among our Younger Generations.  Not only in starting our Interact Club but she has attended all of the meetings and helping them with their own service projects and budgets and transported.

I am proud to say that the Caro Rotary Club has voted Carol Starling as our Rotary Hero.  She was instrumental in starting our Interact Club in 2013-2014 Rotary Year.  She has committed a great deal of her time and even her own money in assisting the student club succeed.  She helped in maintaining and increasing the number of Interacts attending the club (doubled in size in just 1 year).  She has encouraged local community projects they are now involved in.  The interact students now are committing their time at a local elderly center playing games and reading and spending time with the elderly.  Not only has she started the Caro Rotary Interact Club; but because of the local advertising of her efforts and the efforts of the Interact Students, a nearby club saw the advertising and now she is helping another Rotary Club set up their own Interact Club.  This also helps to build the name of Rotary and what Rotary is all about in our local communities.

Carol is also greatly involved in Christmas for Kids.  She organizes Rotary Volunteers to help shop for in need families with wish lists for their children during Christmas time. This is a great undertaking.
She monitors and collects all of the listed items per family and makes sure that each child is not without a happy Christmas and gets what they need and/or desires.   This includes monitoring the finances of all of the purchases.  I’ve seen 6 carts filled to the brim in a row of shopping items for the families.  This is just one shopping trip of many.

We couldn’t be more proud of the time and energy that Carol commits (On Behalf of Rotary) toward these programs.  She is an inspiration to all of what Service Above Self really means.

Murder Mystery Dinner March 14th

On Saturday, March 14, the Thumb Area Center for the Arts and Caro Rotary Club (Rotary Night) hosted an evening of murder mystery intrigue, dinner, silent auction, and prizes for great detective work!  The Dinner & Mystery took place at the Brentwood Back Room for an evening of laughs and mingling with a top notch cast of area actors who were DYING to entertain us.  Attendees supported our hosts with the highest bid on some incredible silent auction items.  There was definitely something for everyone at this event!

For our entertainment, we were guests at the final celebration of Georgio Tortoni's life work.  His tragic passing meant that his beloved historic winery must be sold!  There are many who would have and did kill to own it...plus the valuable land it sits on.  The cast of characters (and suspects): an FBI reject, a Texas land developer, Georgios two feuding daughters, his lackey limo driver and executor of his will, and the mamas boy who will do anything to please his money hungry matriarch, entertained and interacted with us throughout the evening.  We meet them, grill them for motive, collected the clues, and saw who got killed next!  The winner solved the mystery and won a prize of Specialty Winery Wines!

Cocktails began when doors opened at 5:30 pm.  Dinner courses and entertainment began at 6:00 pm with the silent auction and mystery to conclude at approximately 8:30 pm.  Dinner was an Italian Twist of Alfredo Chicken, Salads and Dessert.  Cash bar.  Tickets were $40 per couple or $25 per single ticket and were available at both the Brentwood, 178 Park Drive, Anderson, Tuckey, Bernhardt & Doran, P.C., 715 E. Frank St. and AAA Caro Office at 810 S State St. in Caro,  For more information, call Mary at 989-274-8379 or Cindy at 989-672-6001.  All proceeds went benefit both Caro Rotary Club and the Thumb Area Center for the Arts.

Robert E. Moore of Caro, age 81, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2014 at his home, following a lingering illness. Bob was born June 19, 1933 in Fowlerville, Michigan, the son of the late Floyd and Eliza (Edwards) Moore.  He came to Caro from Livonia in 1965, after working for the Lincoln Mercury division of Ford Motor Company.  He was a graduate of Fowlerville High School and Michigan State University. He was united in marriage with the former Lois Wilcher on August 13, 1955 in Detroit, and she survives him.  For a short period of time, Bob managed his family’s auto dealership in Fowlerville after his father’s death.  In 1965, Bob and Bill Burton purchased the Ford Franchise in Caro and Bob would eventually become the owner and operator of the Ford-Lincoln-Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram dealership in Caro.  He greatly enjoyed his work and the many friends he made during his professional career. In his free time, Bob enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening, puttering around the house, reading and traveling. He was a member of the Caro United Methodist Church, Caro Rotary Club. He will be missed.  We will always remember.  We will keep him and his family in our prayers.

Rotary District 6310 8th Annual Foundation Gala

story thumbnail
John and Cindy and Brenda along with spouses and Catalina attended the District Rotary Foundation Gala Friday Night.  The fellowship and the meal were absolutely amazing.  The Theme of the Dinner at Zehnders was "Old is New”.   Our Chef announced that he brought in 150 year old recipes that were so fabulous.  We had Hand Picked Wild Rice Soup from Northern Minnesota with chicken, mushroom, celery and carrots that was so good.  We had a Salad with Young greens, roasted almonds/walnuts with smoked apple bacon, feta cheese, and pickled beets with a vinaigrette dressing. We had Breaded Veal (150 year old recipe) with squash,  French cut baby green beans with Cheesy potatoes and of course Bavarian Chicken.  The dessert was to die for Chocolate Lava Cake with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream.

Most importantly we learned that all who participate in the Foundation Giving are all "Hero's" to women, children and families of whom we will never meet.  This is why "I am proud to be a Rotarian"

Caro Rotary Pancake Supper a Yearly Success

Our Yearly "Pancake Supper" on October 2nd was a huge success for Caro Rotary.  Almost 1,000 residents of of Caro came to the High School in support of the local Rotary Clubs largest fundraiser.  This fundraiser will help support a large number of local programs in our Caro Community.  It also helps support international projects like clean water, hand washing and latrine programs in outlying areas.  Simple things we take for granted are huge health issues in other countries. A huge shout out "Thank you" to the Caro Community, also to the Boy Scouts, Interact Students and Rotarians who worked tirelessly in support of the Program.

"Let There Be Peace On Earth"

In the middle of the twentieth century, two young people wrote a "religious" song, "Let there be peace on earth", at a retreat, at Camp Herman, in the San Francisco Bay Area hills. The rights for use of the song, by Rotary, were granted to Rotary International by the authors.

"And when I attempted suicide and I didn't succeed, I knew for the first time unconditional love—which God is. God is unconditional love. You are totally loved, totally accepted, just the way you are. In that moment I was not allowed to die, and something happened to me which is very difficult to explain. I had an eternal moment of truth, in which I knew I was loved, and knew I was here for a purpose."—

Jill Jackson Miller, author of "Let There be Peace on Earth," describing events in her early life that developed her unique philosophy of Peace.

The song "Let There be Peace on Earth" has become a global anthem for peace. The late Jill Jackson Miller, an actress and songwriter, wrote "Let There be Peace on Earth" in the summer of 1955. Since that time the song and its message has circulated around the globe.

"Let There Be Peace on Earth."

Let There Be Peace on Earth and let it begin with me.
Let There Be Peace on Earth, the peace that was meant to be!
With God as our Father, family all are we.
Let us walk with each other in perfect harmony.

Let peace begin with me. Let this be the moment now.
With ev'ry breath I take, let this be my solemn vow;
To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally!
Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me!

Written by Sy Miller and Jill Jackson Circa 1955 (revised 2012 by Jack M. B. Selway)

Miller movingly speaks of her early life—how she became an orphan as a young girl, and her difficult journey through foster care, that led her into despair and attempted suicide. She describes that it was then that she realized the presence of a higher power in her life and how she eventually came to write the song. It is a song that has rippled and spread around the world, taking on a life of its own, as people began to live the message and share the song.

Jill Jackson Miller, author of "Let There Be Peace on Earth."

Rotary Leadership Institute

Leadership Institute Needs You

Jul 15, 2014

What is this and why should I care?  At its core, Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a leadership development program.  "Oh, I've had plenty of those," you say. "What's different about this one?"

RLI seeks Rotarians who appear to have the potential for future club leadership (not necessarily as club presidents) and provide them with a quality education in Rotary knowledge and leadership skills so important in voluntary organizations. If you volunteer for any organization, the skills you develop at RLI will help you. Even established leaders praise the benefits of RLI.

Read on for more about the three parts and upcoming dates.

It’s time to register for the Rotary Leadership Institute!  This program consists of three full-day parts presented over time. The programs are presented using the facilitated discussion method, rather than lecture. The fee includes breakfast, lunch and training materials. The cost will vary based on location, but is generally $75. Some clubs absorb this for its members.

Any club member of any RLI district is invited to attend any event regardless of the location. Parts are to be taken sequentially. All sessions are facilitated by certified Discussion Leaders, who are all Rotary governors, or past presidents who have attended all three parts and been certified.
  • Part I covers Leadership Characteristics, Rotary Beyond the Club, Teambuilding, Rotary Foundation I, Membership Retention, and Service Projects.
  • Part II covers Leadership Goal Setting, The Rotary Foundation II, Communication Skills, Ethics -Vocational Service, Membership Recruitment, and Analyzing Your Rotary Club.
  • Part III include International Service, Effective Leadership Strategies (double session), Rotary Opportunities, Leadership –Public Relations, and Making a Difference.
